Sometimes, we see person with disability. Without the intention of hurting them, we asked “What happened to him / her?” out the blue. It might be natural for us to ask but sometimes, it makes them down.

But what could really be the reason behind some disabilities that we know? Let’s know more on the word “disability”.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO),

Disabilities is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations.

Disability is thus not just a health problem. It is a complex phenomenon, reflecting the interaction between features of a person’s body and features of the society in which he or she lives. Overcoming the difficulties faced by people with disabilities requires interventions to remove environmental and social barriers.

People with disabilities have the same health needs as non-disabled people – for immunization, cancer screening etc. They also may experience a narrower margin of health, both because of poverty and social exclusion, and also because they may be vulnerable to secondary conditions, such as pressure sores or urinary tract infections. Evidence suggests that people with disabilities face barriers in accessing the health and rehabilitation services they need in many settings.

WHO (source: )

Disability is conceptualized as being a multidimensional experience for the person involved. There may be effects on organs or body parts, and there may be effects on a person’s participation in areas of life. Correspondingly, three dimensions of disability are recognized in ICF: body structure and function (and impairment thereof), activity (and activity restrictions) and participation (and participation restrictions). The classification also recognizes the role of physical and social environmental factors in affecting disability outcomes.

Disabilities can affect people in different ways, even when one person has the same type of disability as another person. Some disabilities may be hidden, known as invisible disability. There are many types of disabilities, such as those that affect a person’s:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Thinking
  • Learning
  • Movement
  • Mental health
  • Remembering
  • Communicating
  • Social relationships

So in other words, it is a body malfunction of a certain individual. They didn’t want it to be like that but their body is not cooperating. And that is the very reason why they needed our encouragement, love and attention the most.
